Hehe I bought one for a fiver from Maplin, in a sale a few years back, and it came with another one for free! It's a piece of rubbish though, to be honest, with terrible accuracy. It can check continuity just fine (no beeper mind) and is OK for checking if a pack is charged or not. I guess it all depends on what you need the meter for.

    This one: http://www.maplin.co.uk/domestic-multimeter-37279

A fiver for two of them is pretty unbelievable value

As Vikki says most multimeters these days are very good, even the cheap ones. A Fluke is a waste really, unless it's for work.

Fluke T5 1000 came with a free volt alert.excellent for high voltage consumer electrics etc.
Also ended up with a Uni- t 105 rebadged for Gunson more versatile on the lower voltages, vehicles and copters etc and much cheaper.

Sorry to drag up this old thread again, but thought it may be better than starting a new one..
if I want to calibrate my charger, what would be the ideal choice in terms of multimeter? My current one is a cheap Maplins jobbie and isn't very accurate (only 1dp I think) and I don't want to spend the earth as I don't use it for much else...

anyone got any recommendations? Probably needs to read each lipo cell voltage to 3dp. Thanks!

Anyone care to comment or suggest a meter for modelling and calibration of chargers? Thx

Do you need to worry about calibrating a charger, how would you go about it

There are guides for my charger online. Easy to do if you have accurate readings from a known good battery. Simply read the battery voltages using the meter, and then attach battery to charger and adjust the voltage readouts per cell to match those measurements.
The charger has a menu to do this.
I do have my lipo battery checker unit, but I doubt the readings from that are very accurate..

By far the easiest way of doing it is to get someone else to do it for you. Send an email off to the guys at electriflyer.co.uk (Chris is the owners name, I think but I'm terrible at remembering names). Very knowledgeable people and set up for doing that sort of thing. Basically, if you're serious about getting it calibrated go the guys that have the gear and experience to do it properly.

(I have no affiliation with electriflyer other than being a very satisfied customer).

Ordinarily, no you wouldn't unless you had a situation where the individual cells, immediately after balance charging, were consistently reading different voltages on the charger and another voltage reader like a half decent cell tester regardless of which battery you're balance charging. If the cell voltage reading is constantly and significantly different then you may be inadvertantly overcharging that or other cells in your batteries. Significant would be a difference of a couple or more hundred milliamps rather than a few tens of milliamps. With that kind of deviation, it's worth getting the charger checked either by yourself if you have the equipment and wherewithal or a reputable person/business who does.
